One donor's story: Rachel Anne Gaschott Ritchie

  • Minneapolis
  • Organ , Tissue , Eyes
  • Deceased Donor: 2000

Rachel had the largest heart you can imagine – opening it to people of all kinds – good friends and strangers. She was an incredibly hard worker, passionate about most everything, and was training to be a teacher when she was taken away from us by a drunk driver.

Rachel loved people and animals – and she was very devoted to her friends who knew they could always rely on her for help and support.

Rachel was a registered donor but we did not know this at the time of her death. She was hit by a drunk driver just a few days before her 21st birthday. On her driver’s license it was not indicated that she wanted to be a donor – but it was her very first license from the time when she became a driver. Just a few days after she was killed her new license showed up in the mail and she had “checked the box.” This was such a huge relief to us. We agonized over this decision in the hospital because we did not know her wishes for sure but we did know that she always wanted to be helping others.
