One donor's story: Shauna Dalchow
I am a wife and mother of two beautiful boys. I work full time in school district finance. I enjoy scrapbooking, reading and sewing when I have free time!
God, family and friends are important to me. I believe in helping others when I can and I believe there is good in most people! I also believe that God has a journey for us and that He steers us in the right direction.
My mother-in-law’s best friend has PKD. It’s a hereditary disease that also affected her mother, brother and son. I saw a post on Facebook one day that her brother was now in need of a kidney transplant as all PKD sufferers do at some point. I asked how I could see if I was a match! I got the info, called HCMC and talked with the transplant coordinator and was sent a swab test kit, which turned out to be compatible. I was brought in for more testing and given the go ahead for the donation! I truly felt that this was in God’s plan for me and that even though I didn’t know this person directly, he deserved an opportunity to live a full life; to see all of his children graduate, go on to college, get married and have grandkids! Us being so compatible even though there was no relation was a miracle in itself and had to be a sign from above. I’m so happy with my decision to become a donor and seeing how touched he and his family were brings tears to my eyes. We were all given an opportunity to save lives and I was able to do so while I was living to see it! Being a living donor is an honor and a blessing!
