One donor's story: Dana Jefferson
My name is Dana Jefferson, I’m a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. I love my family they are important to me. I enjoy mentoring youth at my church and teaching bible study.
Life is the most impotant gift you can give. I remember while going through the process with my sister. My husband asked will she be able to climb a mountain if she does this and they said of course. Funny thing was I don’t climb mountains so not sure why he picked that. But I understood then people aren’t educated about being a donor and what it means. Something that I will never forget was watching my mother go from room to room before the surgery to give me and my sister equal time. What a strong women to watch both her daughters go under to perform this miracle. After the surgery had been completed 30 minutes later my kidney was working for my sister! Praise God! She was only blessed with the kidney for one year. But I’ll never forget the card that she gave me that says “Thanks for giving me life”
At the age of 16 I knew that I wanted to help someone if anything would ever happen to me. Well, I didn’t have to die to help – I began giving blood at 18 years old. When my sister got sick and they told us she needed a kidney. Now was my chance to give her life! I jumped all over it.
