One donor's story: Fred Carrubba

  • Deceased Donor: 2021

Fred passed away suddenly, but peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was an endeared friend to all and a beacon of light in the community. He was a notorious hard worker, exemplified through his time spent serving in the Marine Corps Reserves, as a brick mason of 50 years and a dedicated volunteer.

Fred was a devoted member and custodian of Saint Anne’s Catholic Church. After Hurricane Katrina, Fred, family and friends coordinated donations filling 2 semi-trucks for relief in Mississippi. He’d take many trips with his wife and members of his parish to Lizana, Mississippi to rebuild the surrounding communities. He was a reliable volunteer for both Hospice Alliance and several years at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis for their fundraiser. In his spare time, he was an enthusiastic bowler, golfer, fisherman, hunter and traveler. Fred had an unforgettable smile, a hearty laugh and the gift of making everyone feel like family. He never shied away from telling a story and was never short on jokes. He was truly a joy to be around to those who knew, loved, and now miss him.

Fred decided to become a donor when he learned through his wife’s Lioness membership of the Lions Gift of Sight program.
