One donor's story: Kathy Schakel-Carlson
I grew up in the Stillwater / St. Croix Valley area and went on to attend Montana State University in Bozeman, where I met my husband – and never got over the breathtaking mountain views! After graduating, I returned to Minnesota for my first job as an engineer, where I’ve continued to work for 34 years now. My husband and I have been incredibly fortunate to raise two wonderful sons who now live in the Twin Cities, as do several other close family members. I am an avid volunteer and have a variety of hobbies, including cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking, handbell choir, scrapbooking, and reading.
Most important to me in my daily life are showing gratitude, giving back, living sustainably, and doing what I can to help others.
I had known my donor-buddy most of my adult life, as we shared the same employer and church. After learning of his need for a new kidney and that I met the first requirement of same blood type, I was glad to start the evaluation steps. Not only was I thrilled to ultimately be a match for my friend, but I also had the direct benefit of my doctor discovering an unrelated health issue for me. This led to a disappointing few-month pause in the donation process but took care of a potentially serious condition. The staff at HCMC were wonderful throughout all the visits and surgeries, and I am now happy to be a first-hand living donor advocate!
